Matti Heilio, PhD, Assoc professor, Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland.
Specialization university-industry collaboration, knowledge transfer and educational issues of industrial mathematics. Chairman of Educational Committee of European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) 2004-07. Editor of ECMI Newsletter. Coordinator of applied mathematics curriculum development projects. Organiser of Mathematical Study Group With Industry workshops and Student Modeling weeks.

Lectures will illustrate relations between mathematics, industry and society. Case examples from various application areas are given. The talk explains various roles how mathematics, modeling and statistics are used in management and industrial research and development. For students the lectures is a motivation for why to study applied mathematics, what can be done with models and simulation, how mathematics and innovation are intertwined etc. Some pedagogical issues, like modeling education will be also discussed. A short presentation of the activities of ECMI will be given.
