The project, called Challenger 1 Mission, involves the use of a glider, unmanned underwater vehicle. The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, via the SIANI University Institute, and the Rutgers University are participating in this project.

The little submarine, named RU-29 Challenger, was launched in Ciudad del Cabo, South Africa, on 18 January 2013, and arrived in Ubatuba, Brasil, the last May 18th. The navigation equipment has been managed by our colleague from the division of Robotic and Computational Oceanography (ROC), Antonio González Ramos and by Nilsen Strandskov, from the Coastal Ocean Observation Laboratory of the Rutgers University.
