Introduction

Scientific and technological advances are key factors to make possible technological progress and ensure an improved quality of life of society. This process was created and developed in universities’ research institutes and in R&D laboratories of advanced technology industries. The development of applied scientific research quality, basic for its usage within the university which is from a particular country depends on human potential and material resources used in universities. Their effective and appropriate organization is crucial to the research’s success.

University Institutes are located precisely in this scheme. The legal framework that protects them legally is established in the ULPGC’s statutes, according to the provisions of the Spanish university law (LOU), the Council of Universities and University Colleges Regulation Guidelines, agreed by the ULPGC’s Board of Governors. According to Article 26 of the Statute of the ULPGC, "the Institutes will be addressed to research and scientific, technological, humanistic or artistic creation." Thus, the research work is enhanced and promotes partnerships with other administrative bodies and private entities, acting as catalysts for research in advanced technological fields and contributing in an organized manner their connection with society.

In this context, and in the field of technologies related to Computer Engineering, lies the SIANI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE (Institute of Intelligent Systems and Numerical Applications in Engineering).
